On Sunday, 1 March, 2015 I attended a very special event indeed. Appropriately dated to fall close to Mother’s Day, the Tesco Mum of the Year awards pays tribute to an exceptional group of mums; mums who have worked hard to support others, after much personal sacrifice of their own. I was lucky enough to meet these women in the ‘green room’ (I know!), and was humbled by how normal these extraordinary women are. Incredibly nervous, worried about tripping up the steps, and coming face-to-face with celebrity presenters, these are just everyday people. Except they’re not.

These women have all worked their socks off to achieve things which mean so much, not only to themselves, but to so many other people who, without their support, would have harder lives. Lord knows being a mum is a challenge at times. Throw a life-changing event into that mix and it gets harder still. Find a mum who has all that on her plate, yet still works tirelessly for others, and you have a supermum.
I wrote about Gail earlier in the year, and I was privileged to meet her before the ceremony to find out more about her charity Wipe Away Those Tears. Her co-winners were equally impressive, and we all chatted over champagne as we watched the enormous green-room operation that an event like this needs getting underway. Then it was off to the very glamorous dining room of the Savoy for a gorgeous dinner, and some hobnobbing with Blue, Fearne Cotton, and Eileen from Coronation Street (her name’s Sue, and I know this because I sat with her last year for a good old natter, but sorry Sue, you’ll always be Eileen to me)!
